You Have No Say in Anything At All Sml

You Have No Say in Anything At All. (50x70cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2017. SOLD.

A change from my usual landscapes, to express a point I feel is increasingly true these days. I painted this from my own imagination rather than using any actual subject matter, other than a few preliminary sketches I made, scribbled at a pub table, when I got the idea. This helped stop me inclining to a more realist work which I wanted to avoid. I tweaked the painting till I got it how I wanted, paying particular attention to the facial expressions of the five figures.

Tram Stop in Exchange Sq., Manchester Sm

Tram Stop in Exchange Sq. (East) Manchester. (50x70cm Acrylic on Board) painted 2018. SOLD.

This scene of Exchange Square changed dramatically when a metrolink Tram station was built in the centre of it, so this painting was re-worked to incorporate that.

Dale Street Looking North, Manchester Sml

Dale Street Looking North, Manchester. (50x40cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2014. FOR SALE. Contact for details.

The southern area of the Northern Quarter near Piccadilly Basin is full of character and is quintessentially mancunian despite it being used frequently in film location as a substitute for New York and I wish there were more acres of such blocks.

As I walked Through Bury Sml1

As I Walked Through Bury. (50x40cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2014. SOLD.

Whilst showing paintings at Bury Art Gallery, I went for a walk around the centre and explored what was a relatively unknown town to me. It was a sunny spring day.

St. Ann's Square East, Manchester No 4 Sml

St. Ann's Square, East, Manchester, No. 4. 40x50cm Acrylic on board. Painted 2017. FOR SALE. Contact for details.

This is the fourth version I have painted of an St. Ann's Square in Manchester looking Eastwards. My main compositional preoccupation was on use of colours and effects to produce a joyously harmonious yet stimulating unwordly effect, even though it is a representation of an actual place, distorted by being processed through my mind's eye

Available as a signed, limited edition print.

Group of Women Sml

Group of Women (40x50cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2008.FOR SALE

The Jolly Angler, Ancoats, Manchester Sml1

The Jolly Angler, Ancoats, Manchester. (50x40cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2017.FOR SALE price available on request.

A wonderful time capsule located on the border between Ancoats and the twilight zone.

JAKE: Those pheasants are for his pot. These eels are for my pot. Now what makes you think I should give you something for your pot?

WITHNALL: What pot?

Probably a good place to find an eel for your pot.

The Queen's Head, Underbank, Stockport Sml

The Queen's Head, Underbank, Stockport. (40x50cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2012.FOR SALE price available on request.

Also known as Turner's vaults, this reputedly haunted pub is well known for its heritage interior and the smallest gents toilet in the Western hemisphere. It's located in the oldest part of Stockport with many cobbled passageways and winding steps up to the Victorian market and I tried to capture some of that alluring yet strange historic atmosphere in this painting.

Pubs on Kennedy St. Manchester No. 2 Sm

Pubs On Kennedy St. No.2 (50x70cm. Acrylic on board) Painted 2018. FOR SALE Price available on request

Building in Manchester Sml

Building in Manchester (50x40cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2011.FOR SALE.

There are many buildings in Manchester not necessarily listed and therefore protected but which, to my mind, encapsulate the unique character of the city due to their distinctive red-brick colour, their context and other factors, and this is one of them. I love this small area of Manchester just west of Piccadilly Station (though it was better before the new bland Motel One development) with its distinctive, quintessentially Mancunian atmosphere, and this building in particular, hence I painted it.

Underbank, (Looking South), Stockport Sml

Underbank (Looking South), Stockport. (50x40cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2014.FOR SALE. Contact for details

This is the view from St. Petersgate bridge looking down on Underbank below as it winds its way up to Robinson's Brewery. This old part of Stockport is, for me, the most interesting and characterful part of the town.

Terraced Houses in Manchester No. 2 Sml

Terraced Houses No. 2 (Streets in Manchester) (50x70cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2012.FOR SALE. Contact for details.

A second version of the terraced house theme painting from imagination but based on many streets found all over the city. This time with some trees included which makes it even less correspondent to the reality/realism than giving all the figures the fantastically proportioned heads and making them ironically niave.

The Path Sm

Man on a Path (50x70cm Acrylic on board.) Painted 2010. FOR SALE Contact for details.

Canal Street East, Manchester No. 3 Sml

Canal Street East, Manchester, No 3. (50x70cm Acrylic on board.) FOR SALE. Contact for details.

The eastern end of canal street near Piccadilly station but looking west with the canal of the left. At the time of the painting the bars were Taurus and and Velvet.

Trafford Town Hall Sml

Trafford Town Hall (40x50cm. Acrylic on board) Painted 2006 SOLD.

This was painted upon request in 2006 with the intention to use it as part of a campaign to save the hall from demolition, yet Trafford Council changed their mind after much public protest and thankfully the building was saved. I've decided to now offer it for sale.
