Spinningfields With Lowry Matchstick Figures Sml

Spinninfields With Lowry Matchstick Figures. 50x70cm Acrylic on board. Painted 2010. SOLD

I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose the iconic, matchstick figures by now traditionally associated with old Manchester and it's landscape of dark statanic mills, factories and smoking chimneys as painted by LS Lowry, and set them within the quasi-futuristic, steel and gleaming glass landscapes of contemporary Manchester, to perhaps pose questions about the image of the city which still lingers today, it's direction in a historical context and suggest therein, well I dunno, something or other, and this painting of such figures in Spinningfields, Manchester, was the first of them. Of course, there are some people who would say Spinningields is equally dark and satanic, but in a more subtle way.

The building on the left was once the location where I attended many of the annual Winter Beer festivals. There is no connection with that fact and the appearance of this painting.

I've enjoyed the way The Lowry Centre at Salford Quays looks in the evening, when it is lit up by purple, violet, blue, red, white and amber lighting, and I tried to capture some of that exciting yet moodful impression with this early painting.
