The featured painting is ‘Spinningfields with Lowry Matchstick Figures’ (50x70cm Acrylic on board.) I thought it would be a good, or at least interesting, idea to paint a scene of the ultra-modern, streamlined, minimalist glass and steel buildings that have recently sprung up in the Spinningfields area of Manchester and then populate the scene with specifically Lowyresque matchstick figures to produce a juxtaposition that poses questions about the image and landscape of Manchester, or something or other. I thought it worked quite well! So there’s every chance I may create other paintings in the future using the same juxtaposition. Plus Lowry figures are a lot easier to paint than my own, with less shading etc, so saves me a bit of time in the process!
